In just a few decades Dubai has grown from a small trading port into a global meeting point, and you can feel its pace on every corner. The 828-metre Burj Khalifa, the man-made Palm Jumeirah and the glowing towers of Dubai Marina show its modern face, while the wind-tower houses of Al Fahidi and the abra boats crossing Dubai Creek keep the city's older rhythm alive.

Days on a Dubai tour are full without being tiring: a morning city tour through the Gold and Spice Souks, then an afternoon desert safari to watch the sun set over the dunes. Many programmes also add a visit to Abu Dhabi and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours away by road.

A direct flight of around four and a half hours, a time difference of just one hour and mild winter weather make Dubai an easy choice for short breaks too. The city is orderly and safe, and getting around by metro, taxi or tour transfer is straightforward. In public places, and especially when visiting mosques, clothing that covers shoulders and knees is appreciated.
