The Maldives is made up of more than a thousand islands spread across 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean, and each resort island is usually home to a single hotel. This one-island, one-resort model means a secluded, private holiday: mornings on a terrace above the lagoon, evenings watching the sunset from the beach.
After landing at Velana International Airport in Malé, you reach your resort by speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight depending on its location. Days fill with snorkelling over coral reefs, sunset boat trips, spa rituals and slow hours by the lagoon. With a little luck you may spot rays and harmless reef sharks in the shallows.
Resorts offer a range of board options, and since there are few dining choices beyond your island, choosing the right plan from the start matters. As the Maldives is a Muslim country, alcohol is not available on local islands and dress codes are more conservative there; these restrictions do not apply on resort islands.
