Overview
Southern Italy moves to a very different rhythm from the north: slopes terraced with lemon groves, colourful villages tumbling to the sea and whitewashed towns. This route starts in Rome and crosses from the Tyrrhenian coast to the Adriatic, travelling the length of Italy's south.
We explore Pompeii, buried under ash by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, and follow the winding Amalfi Coast road to Positano and Amalfi; this full day is included. We then stop among the rock-cut dwellings of Matera before continuing to Puglia, to Alberobello with its cone-roofed trulli and to Polignano a Mare, perched on its cliffs.
Because we fly home from Bari, we never retrace our route. On the final day we visit the basilica of St Nicholas, whose relics were brought from Myra (today's Demre), for a fitting end to the journey.

Itinerary
Day 1 Istanbul – Rome
We meet our guide at Sabiha Gökçen Airport and fly to Rome on an AJet special flight. On arrival our city tour takes in the exterior of the Colosseum and views over the Roman Forum. After visiting the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain, we check in to our hotel.
Day 2 Rome – Pompeii – Naples
After breakfast we head south to the Campania region. In Pompeii our guide leads us through the streets, forum, baths and fresco-decorated houses frozen in time by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79. In the late afternoon we check in to our hotel in the Naples area.
Day 3 Amalfi Coast: Positano and Amalfi
Crossing the Sorrento Peninsula, we join the Amalfi Coast road as it winds above the sea. In Positano there is a viewpoint stop and free time in the lanes leading down to the beach below its colourful hillside houses. We then see the steps of St Andrew's Cathedral and the lemon-filled shops of Amalfi before returning to Naples in the evening.
Day 4 Naples – Matera – Puglia
In the morning a short tour of Naples takes in Piazza del Plebiscito, the Royal Palace, the Galleria Umberto I and the Spaccanapoli street. Crossing into Basilicata, we walk through the Sassi of Matera, the UNESCO-listed districts of homes carved into the rock. In the evening we reach our hotel in Puglia.
Day 5 Alberobello – Polignano a Mare
We explore Alberobello's Rione Monti district, with its whitewashed trulli topped by conical stone roofs. In the afternoon there is free time in Polignano a Mare, built on cliffs above the Adriatic, overlooking the Lama Monachile cove. In the evening we return to our hotel.
Day 6 Bari – Istanbul
We walk the narrow lanes of Bari Vecchia, the old town, and see the basilica of St Nicholas, whose relics were brought from Myra in 1087, as well as the Norman-Swabian Castle. We transfer to Bari Airport and fly back to Istanbul on an AJet special flight at the end of our tour.

Throughout the tour you stay in comfortable 4★ hotels with breakfast. Hotels are in or around Naples for the Naples nights and in the Bari area for the Puglia nights. Hotel names are confirmed 7 days before departure.

Transport
The flight into Rome and back from Bari are AJet special flights; an air-conditioned coach is used throughout the tour. On the Amalfi Coast day, transport may be by smaller vehicles depending on road conditions.

Visa Information Visa Required
As Italy is a Schengen country, Turkish citizens holding ordinary passports need a Schengen visa. Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and be valid for at least 3 months (preferably 6 months) after the return date. Appointment demand rises at busy times, so we recommend applying at least 6–8 weeks before departure; our adviser can help with the document list, and current requirements are confirmed before travel.
Important Information
- Special flight times may be changed by the airline; exact times are confirmed before departure.
- Because of restrictions on large vehicles along the Amalfi Coast road, transport on this day may be by smaller vehicles or, in season, by boat; on winter dates some shops and restaurants may be closed.
- Comfortable shoes are recommended, as Pompeii and Matera involve walking on uneven stone surfaces.
- The tour operates with a minimum of 20 participants; if this is not reached you will be informed 10 days before departure.
- The child price (ages 2–12) applies when sharing a room with two adults on an extra bed.

Is the Amalfi Coast day really included?
Yes. The full-day Amalfi Coast excursion to Positano and Amalfi, with transport and guiding, is included in the price, so there is nothing extra to pay.
What is my baggage allowance on the special flights?
On the AJet special flights each passenger has a 15 kg baggage allowance plus a cabin bag. Extra baggage can be added for a fee when you book.
Why is the Pompeii entry ticket not included?
Site ticket prices and concessions (students, children and so on) vary by person, so the ticket is kept separate to keep the tour price low. Tickets are purchased as a group by our guide.
