Sunrise game drives on the savanna, the roar of Victoria Falls and Cape Town beneath Table Mountain: Africa offers scenes you will carry with you for years.
Safari is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Africa, and it is one of those rare experiences that lives up to expectations. On morning and evening game drives with experienced trackers in South Africa's Kruger National Park and the private reserves around it, you have a chance of seeing the Big Five: lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino. Botswana's Chobe National Park, meanwhile, is known for its large herds of elephants.
Many routes combine safari with Cape Town and Victoria Falls. In Cape Town you ride the cable car up Table Mountain, visit a penguin colony on the coastal road towards the Cape of Good Hope and enjoy lunch in the winelands. At Victoria Falls, seen from the Zimbabwean side, you feel the power of the Zambezi as it plunges into a deep gorge.
In North Africa, Tunisia offers a different African experience with a short flight and visa-free entry: the ruins of Carthage, the blue-and-white lanes of Sidi Bou Said and oases on the edge of the Sahara. On southern African routes, the visa process and health precautions for some safari areas should be planned in advance, and neutral-coloured layers are best for game drives.
